The human body has 24 vertebrae. The top 7 are cervical. The next twelve are the thorasic vertebrae, each of which is connected to a rib. These are followed by the 5 large lumbar vertebrae. The vertebrae, coccyx and sacrum are short, or irregular, bones.
Articulations between vertabrae are cartligenous joints. The cartilage in these joints is called intervertebral discs.
The sacrum transmits weight down from the vertebrae to the hip joints.
