Burning Nonmetals

Purpose

The purpose of this lab is to give us an idea of the nature of the products of a burning nonmetal.

Observations

The glass bottle became foggy and smoke spilled out.

When the water was tested with Hydrion paper it registered a pH of 2, a strong acid. The phenolphthalein did not turn pink reaffirming the fact that this product is not a base.

Conclusion

When nonmetals react with oxygen they form nonmetallic oxides with a H+ ion.

The reaction of nonmetallic oxides with water will produce an acid. Nonmetallic oxide gasses such as sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide dissolved in rainfall cause acid rain.

These products share a H+ ion.
